EAST LANSING, Mich. - There's a new freshman goaltending phenom in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Just ask the Michigan State Spartans.
Nebraska-Omaha's Dan Ellis made 34 saves, outdueling MSU's Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.), leading the Mavericks to a thrilling 2-1 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 6,511 at Munn Ice Arena tonight in the CCHA opener for both teams.
"We generated opportunities but we have to give credit where credit is due," said MSU head coach Ron Mason. "Dan Ellis is a heck of a goalie."
Nebraska-Omaha (2-1-0/1-0-0 CCHA) needed just 22 seconds to get on the board. The Mavericks' Allan Carr poked a rebound off a Ed Cassin shot past Miller to take an early lead. UNO added a second goal with 1:13 left in the second period when James Chalmers easily converted on a shot that trickled through Miller's pads into the crease. Miller stopped 31 shots on the night.
The Spartans (1-1-1/0-1-0 CCHA) sprang to life early in the third period. Adam Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich.) notched his second goal of the season when he tipped a drive off the stick of John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) past Ellis 18 seconds into the third period. The power-play goal snapped a streak of 13 straight scoreless opportunities with the man advantage for MSU.
The second game of the two-game set between the two teams takes place tomorrow night at Munn Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
