Day One Of MSU Open IS Complete

EAST LANSING, MICH. - The No. 9 ranked Michigan State Spartans opened their home season with the first day of MSU Open today (Nov. 18) at Jenison Field House. The tournament features some of the top teams from the Big Ten and over 350 individual wrestlers.
The Spartans find themselves with nine wrestlers in the quarterfinals after the first two sessions of the meet. There is at least one wreslter in the quarterfinals in nine of the ten weight classes.
At 125 pounds, Chris Williams (Perry, Mich./Fowlerville) advanced to the quarterfinal round via a first round tech fall (18-3) against Tennessee-Chatanooga's B.J. Malone. He also scored a second-round win by decision (4-3) over Northwestern's Potashick and a third-round fall (0:51) over Kent's Ray Sabin.
2000 All-American Pat McNamara (Jordan, Mich./Jordan) made his season debute, ranked fourth in the country at 133 pounds. McNamara easily advanced to the quarterfinals with a tech fall in the first round, a pin in the second and a major decision (12-0) over SUNY-Borckport's Palumbo.
At 141 pounds, No.5 ranked Mike Castillo (Rochester, Mich./Forest Hills Central) outscored his opponents 37-10 on his way to the quareterfinals.
Karl Nadolsky (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) got back on track after a uneasy start in the EMU Open. Nadolsky, who is ranked 20th in the country at 149 pounds, marched his way to the quarterfinals highlighted with a 0:43 pin of Kent State's Lensman in the second round.
No. 11 Gray Maynard (Las Vegas, N.V./St. Edward) will face fellow Spartan Corey Posey (Columbia, Tenn./Westfield) in the quarterfinals at 157 pounds.
John Wechter (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) advanced to the 184 weight class quarterfinal, posting two strong victories, including a thumping of Kent State's Knoll in the second round. Wechter defeated Knoll via tech. fall, 18-3.
No. 19 ranked Nik Fekete (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) advanced to the quarterfinals with two victories via pins in earlier rounds. He pinned Findlay's Bessen in the first round (3:32) and Northern Illinois's Reardon (3:11) in the second round.
No. 9 ranked heavyweight Matt Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Overbrook) won both of his opening round match-ups, beating Grand Valley State's Stauffer 11-7 in the first round and Kent State's Swetter, 7-2, in the second round.
Competition concludes on Nov. 19 with wrestling beginning at 10 a.m.
