Michigan State Drops Hard-Fought Dual to Central Michigan on Senior Night, 19-15

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling won five matches but fell in a hard-fought dual to Central Michigan, 19-15, on Senior Night at Jenison Field House on Friday night.
With both teams winning five matches, the difference in the dual came down to a pin by Central Michigan at 165 pounds in overtime.
Michigan State wraps up the regular season at 4-10, while CMU improves to 10-6.
Nick Corday started off the dual strong for MSU, taking an early 7-0 advantage in the first period with a takedown and near-fall points against Archer Anderson. Anderson came back in the third and trimmed Corday's advantage to 9-8, but Corday tacked on a riding-time point to claim the 10-8 victory.
Central Michigan tied the dual with Andrew Austin's 9-4 decision over Caleb Weiand at 133 pounds, and took a 7-3 lead after Nick Blackburn's 9-1 major decision against Jace Morgan at 141.
The Spartans bounced back in the 149-pound match as Evan Gosz scored a late takedown against Jimmy Nugent in the final seconds of the third period to break a 1-1 stalemate and earn the 4-1 decision.
At 157, Darius Marines held a 7-6 advantage with an escape to start the third, but then gave up a takedown to No. 21 Mason Shrader and eventually lost in an 11-7 decision, putting CMU on top, 10-6, at intermission.
DJ Shannon battled Chandler Amaker to overtime at 165 pounds with the score tied at 1, but following a scoreless sudden victory period, Amaker pinned Shannon with just 6.7 seconds remaining in the first tiebreaker round as Central Michigan extended its lead to 16-6.
Wrestling in his final match at Jenison Field House on Senior Night, 174-pounder Connor O'Neill came away with a 2-0 victory over Cody Brenner. O'Neill earned an escape point to start the third period after accumulating two minutes of riding time in the second, and held onto the riding-time advantage in the 2-0 shutout win.
CMU's Wyatt Ferguson defeated Ryan Boucher at 184 pounds, 2-1, but No. 22 Kael Wisler held off Luke Cochran, 3-2, in the first set of tiebreakers at 197 to win MSU's fourth match of the dual. Wisler held a brief three-second riding-time advantage following the first tiebreaker to get the win.
In a matchup of ranked wrestlers at heavyweight, No. 33 Josh Terrill of Michigan State outlasted No. 29 Bryan Caves, 4-2, to close out the dual.
Prior to the match, Michigan State recognized its four seniors, Braden Stauffenberg, Ryan Boucher, DJ Shannon and Connor O'Neill.
Michigan State returns to action at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State, on March 7-8.
