MSU Wrestling Gets New Assistant Coach

EAST LANSING, MICH . - Two-time freestyle World Champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Alexis Vila, has joined the Michigan State wrestling coaching staff. The 29-year old international wrestler, who defected from Cuba three years ago, joins the staff replacing assistant coach Andy Brydon who has just graduated from law school and is pursuing a career in corporate law.
Vila is a highly decorated wrestler winning his first world championship in 1993 at 105 lbs. He repeated as World Champion in 1994 and was world runner-up in 1995. He won Olympic bronze in 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Vila also captured the 1997 Pan American Games Championship at 119 lbs.
Vila was born in city of Villa Clara, Cuba and earned his degree in physical education from the Instituto Superior de Cultura Fisica y Deporte Manuel Fajaldo.
