EAST LANSING, Mich. - Andrew Bogle (Calgary, Alta.), John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) and Brian Maloney (Bassano, Alta.) each tallied a goal and an assist as top-ranked Michigan State (12-1-4 overall, 9-1-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) handed Ferris State a 4-1 defeat at Munn Ice Arena tonight. The win extends the MSU unbeaten streak to 14 (11-0-3) while the Bulldogs (3-9-4, 1-8-3) remain winless in their last six outings.
The two teams picked up where they left off after Friday's scoreless draw by failing to tally in the first frame. The Spartans, however, generated a number of quality scoring chances in the opening period, outshooting the Bulldogs, 10-4.
Ferris State drew first blood midway through the second period with a man-advantage tally at 10:14. The Bulldogs' Jim Dube, pinching from his position on the point of power play, grabbed a loose rebound in front of the Spartan net and lifted it past MSU netminder Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.), snapping the sophomore goaltender's shutout streak at 154:01 in the process.
Bogle drew the Spartans even just 41 seconds later. The senior center spun out of the near corner with the puck and skated into the near circle, where he lauched a shot that squeezed past Ferris State goalie Phil Osaer on the short side, ending MSU's scoreless skid of 121:42.
Liles gave MSU a one-goal advantage after 40 minutes and snapped a Spartan scoreless streak that had spanned the team's last 15 power plays in the process. The sophomore defenseman let loose with a blast from just inside the blue line that appeared to hit the stick of a Ferris State defender and carom past Osaer with 1:47 left in the stanza.
The Spartans salted away the victory with a pair of third-period tallies. John Nail (Brampton, Ont.) scored MSU's third goal of the evening when he tipped a Bogle pass from the far half-boards past Osaer 8:25 into the third period. Maloney added the Spartans' final tally when his shot hit a Bulldog defenseman and caromed between the FSU netminder's legs at 17:31.
Miller made 16 saves for the Spartans. Osaer stopped 19 shots for Ferris State.
MSU returns to action on Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Detroit for the annual Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena. The Spartans play Boston College in first-round action and will face either Michigan Tech or Michigan the following day.
