Softball Falls To Iowa In Season Opener

Tempe, Arizona - The 17th-ranked Michigan State softball team lost its season opener to No. 25 Iowa, 5-0, today in the opening game of the Louisville Slugger Classic in Tempe, Arizona.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Kristin Johnson hit a two-run homer over the left field fence off of starter Becky Gray. The Hawkeyes added three more runs in the top of the sixth off of reliever Erica Strutz. Kristi Hanks had a two RBI single and Kelly Zeilstra rounded out the scoring with a single that drove in one run.
Gray (Burr Oak, Mich.), who suffered the loss, last four and a third innings before giving way to Strutz.
Michigan State could muster just three hits against Hawkeye starter Zeilstra. Senior Carrie Fry (Cerritos, Calif.) collected one of the hits for the Spartans, extending her hitting streak to 10 games.
