Lafayette, La. - The 24th-ranked Michigan State softball team defeated Florida A&M, 7-2, today in the Louisiana-Lafayette Tournament to improve to 3-4 on the season. The game was delayed for 30 minutes because of rain.
The Spartans got on the board early, building a 5-0 lead after the first two innings. Following a two-run first, MSU added three runs in the second. Sophomore Andrea Goldsworthy (Royal Oak) scored on a single by sophomore Tiffany Thomas (Ontario, Calif.), who later crossed the plate on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Junior Shealee Dunavan knocked in the last run of the inning with a single to rightfield that scored senior Carrie Fry (Cerritos, Calif.).
Senior Stacey Phillips (St. Clair Shores) hit a two-run homer, her third of the year, deep over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the fourth. Her two RBI gave her 110 in her career, breaking the Spartan all-time record previously held by Keri Lemasters (108). Phillips tied the record in the first with a RBI single that scored Thomas.
Sophomore Keri DeJong (Portage) started on the mound for the Spartans, winning her second game of the season (2-0). DeJong held the Rattlerettes to five hits, while striking out four and walking three.
Thomas, Fry and Phillips each collected two hits to lead the Spartan offensive attack.
MSU's game against North Carolina scheduled for later in the day was called because of rain. The Spartans will close out play in the tournament with games against the Tar Heels and Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, Feb. 27.
