TAMPA, FLA.- - The Michigan State softball team held off Ball State, 3-2, in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday, March 5. MSU won the first game 7-2.
Michigan State improves to 6-5 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 4-5.
MSU scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Tiffany Wallace (Wildomar, Calif.) hit a two-run single to left field, followed by an RBI single by Lacy Hauxhurst (Westminister, Calif.). Michigan State only had three hits after a four-hit first inning.
Ball State scored runs in the third and fourth innings. The Cardinals had eleven hits but could only muster two runs, and left ten runners-on-base.
Erica Strutz (Howell, Mich.) got the win for MSU, pitching 4 1/3 innings to improve her record to 2-1. Keri DeJong (Portage, Mich.) relieved Strutz in the fifth, earning her first save after giving up only one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow, March 6, to face Boston Univ. in a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m.
