EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State hockey coach Ron Mason announced the signings of three players to National Letters of Intent today. Two of the signees will join the Spartans for the 2002-03 season, while one will defer his acceptance to MSU until the fall of 2003.
The Spartan signees are:
* Colton Fretter, Right Wing, 5-10, 187 lbs., Harrow, Ont., born March 12, 1982: Fretter, who plays for the Chatham Maroons in the Western Ontario Junior Hockey League, currently leads the league in scoring with 25 goals and 23 assists for 48 points in 23 games. His 25 goals, five game-winning goals and five shorthanded markers are tops in the WOJHL. He's also among the top five in the league in power-play goals, power-play points and assists. A first-team all-star with Chatham in 2000-01, he led the league in scoring with 33-39--72 in 54 regular-season games. Fretter's team also captured the WOJHL championship in 2001, as he posted 7-6--13 in 15 playoff games.
Mason on Fretter: "Players that have proven they can play well in (the WOJHL) have also succeeded at the next level. Colton's got good hands and a good stick. He is a proven scorer at each level he has played."
* Corey Potter, Right Defense, 6-3, 175 lbs., Okemos, Mich., born Jan. 5, 1984: Potter is a member of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program Under-18 squad and has four assists in 19 games this season. He played for the USA Hockey Under-17 team in 2000-01 and had 4-4--8 in 66 contests.
Mason on Potter: "It's always nice to be able to bring a local kid into our program. Corey is a rangy, mobile defenseman. He makes very good first passes and plays with an edge."
* Drew Miller, Left Wing, 6-1, 165, East Lansing, Mich., born Feb. 17, 1984: Miller will not join the Spartans until 2003, when he'll become the tenth member of his family to don the Green and White. A member of the North American Hockey League's Capital Centre Pride, Miller has seven goals and five assists for 12 points in 18 games this season. He's the brother of current MSU goaltender Ryan Miller.
Mason on Miller: "Drew is a power forward who plays hard His ability to play along the wall and in front of the net make him an effective player. He's a very smart player and understands the game."
