York Named To U.S. Olympic Hockey Team

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State standout Mike York was one of six players added to the 2002 United States Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team Saturday (Dec. 22). The Waterford, Mich., native, who is a member of the New York Rangers, joins the U.S. team in Salt Lake City for competition Feb. 8-24.
York skated with the Spartans from 1995-99 and finished his collegiate career with 201 points. He was a two-time All-American and finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 1998 and 1999 and was the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Player of the Year as a senior. His international hockey experience includes stints with Team USA at the World Junior Championships in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
The three-year veteran currently ranks tied for second in the National Hockey League in scoring with 15-22--37 in 37 games with the Rangers. He's also second in the league with +22 plus-minus rating and is tied for seventh among NHL skaters with 22 assists. York, the Rangers' seventh-round pick (136th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, placed third in voted for the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year in 1999.
Other players named to the U.S. team in addition to York are the Boston Bruins' Brian Rolston, Aaron Miller and Adam Deadmarsh of the Los Angeles Kings, the Edmonton Oilers' Tom Poti and Phil Housley of the Chicago Blackhawks. York is the lone Spartan participating in the 2002 Olympic men's hockey tournament.
