BYU Defeats MSU Softball In Season Opener, 11-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Michigan State softball team lost its season opener to Brigham Young, 11-1 in five innings, Friday afternoon (Feb. 16) in the Arizona State/Louisville Slugger Classic. MSU falls to 0-1, while BYU improves to 4-8.
BYU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a homer over the center field fence by Oli Keohohou, who finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
The Cougars extended their lead to 6-0 after scoring five runs in the second on three walks and two hits. BYU added three runs in the fourth on four consecutive hits, increasing the lead to 9-0.
The Spartans scored their first run of the season on a RBI single by Amanda Melton (Jr., Saugus, Calif.), who knocked in pinch-runner Theresa Pusateri (Homewood, Ill.) from second.
Brigham Young added two more runs in the fifth to close the game at 11-1.
Niki Stemberger (0-1) started on the mound for the Spartans, allowing six runs and three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
MSU returns to action later Friday afternoon to face No. 6 Arizona State.
