EAST LANSING, Mich. - The accolades keep rolling in for Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.)
The Spartan netminder was named College Player of the Year by USA Hockey and will be honored at the organization's annual banquet in Colorado Springs Saturday (June 9). Miller also earned the 2001 Hobey Baker Award given to college hockey's top individual performer in addition to garnering first-team All-America honors and numerous Central Collegiate Hockey Association awards, including the league's Player of the Year, CCHA Playoff Most Valuable Player and All-CCHA First Team and all-league tournament recognition.
Miller, who helped MSU to the CCHA regular-season and playoff championships last season and a berth in the 2001 NCAA Frozen Four, posted a 31-5-4 overall record, a 1.32 goals against average, a .950 saves percentage and 10 shutouts. He led the nation in wins, winning percentage, goals against average, saves percentage and shutouts and broke the NCAA's record for career shutouts when he blanked Alaska-Fairbanks last February for his 17th career shutout.
Miller is the second Spartan skater to be named USA Hockey's College Player of the Year, following Mike York, who earned the honor in 1999. It's also the second time Miller has been recognized by USA Hockey - he won the organization's Koho/Dave Peterson Award for top junior goaltender in 1998.
