EAST LANSING, Mich. - Fox Sports Net's Detroit-based regional network announced today (Aug. 6) that it will broadcast the "Cold War" hockey game featuring Michigan State and Michigan live from Spartan Stadium. The start time of the contest, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6, has also been switched from the original 6 p.m. faceoff to 7 p.m.
The cable outlet has been the television home of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association for each of the previous four seasons. Fox Sports Detroit carried 18 games involving CCHA teams last season. FSN reaches 2.4 million homes in Michigan, northwest Ohio and northern Indiana.
"Fox Sports Net has been a great partner to the CCHA and college hockey," said CCHA Commissioner Tom Anastos. "we're excited and confident that they will do an outstanding job in producing this game."
In addition to the live broadcast, more than 20 million homes in other Fox Sports Net regions across the country will air the telecast at a later date. Regional networks that are confirmed to air the tape-delayed telecast include FSN-Chicago, FSN-Midwest (Nebraska only), FSN-New England, FSN-North, FSN-Ohio, FSN-Pittsburgh and FSN-Rocky Mountain. Air dates and times in each region are still to be determined.
A sellout crowd of 72,027 is anticipated for the "Cold War" tilt. Ticket sales for the event were suspended last month after 61,000 seats were sold in two weeks. The MSU ticket office is holding seats for Michigan State students and additional requests from Spartan hockey season-ticket holders.
A full house at Spartan Stadium for the "Cold War" would break three hockey attendance records. The North American collegiate attendance record is 21,576 (Michigan State vs. Michigan Tech, Dec. 29, 1984 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit) and the North American attendance mark is 28,183 (Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay, 1996 NHL playoffs at the ThunderDome in St. Petersburg, Fla.) The world ice hockey attendance record is 55,000, set at Lenin Stadium for the 1957 World Championships in Moscow (Sweden vs. USSR).
