MSU Hockey Picked To Repeat As CCHA Champions

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State is the overwhelming choice to repeat as Central Collegiate Hockey Association champion, according to the results of the league's media poll released in conjunction with the CCHA's annual media day in Detroit Tuesday (Sept. 25). The Spartans, who captured their 10th tournament title and seventh league crown last season, received 22 of a possible 26 first place votes. Michigan finished second in balloting and joined Nebraska-Omaha, Ohio State and Miami as other schools receiving a single first-place vote.
The Spartans received 306 total points with the Wolverines in second with 273 points. Nebraska-Omaha had 241 points, good for third place in the preseason rankings, with Ohio State in fourth position with 207 points. Northern Michigan, with 184 points, was projected as the league's fifth-place team while Miami rounded out the top six with 182 points.
The seven through 12 spots in the preseason poll were held by Western Michigan (172 points), Bowling Green (110), Lake Superior State (101), Ferris State (98), Notre Dame (90) and Alaska Fairbanks (64). The members of the media ranked the 12 CCHA teams in projected order of finish for the regular season. Points were awarded on a 12-11-10-9, etc., basis.
