EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State freshman center Jim Slater (Lapeer, Mich.) was one of seven players named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association all-rookie team.
Slater paces MSU newcomers and ranks fourth on the team with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points in 32 games. He's also third among Spartan skaters with a +13 plus-minus rating. The 6-foot, 186-pound pivot, who missed four games while playing with Team USA in the 2002 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic during the holiday break, finished the regular season as the CCHA's second-leading freshman scorer.
Joining Slater on the CCHA all-rookie squad are forwards Pat Dwyer of Western Michigan, Michigan's Eric Nystrom and Aaron Voros of Alaska Fairbanks. Defensemen named to the team were Ferris State's Matt York and Eric Werner of Michigan, while Mike Brown of Ferris State is the team's goaltender.
Defenseman Duncan Keith (Penticton, B.C.), who has three goals and 12 assists this season, was one of five players receiving CCHA all-rookie honorable mention status. Other players earning honorable mention are Nebraska-Omaha forward Dan Hacker, Miami defenseman Joe Pomaranski and goaltenders Morgan Cey of Notre Dame and Matt Violin of Lake Superior State.
The Spartans start CCHA postseason play this weekend as they welcome Bowling Green to East Lansing for a first-round, best-of-three playoff series.
