Miller Named To U.S. World Championship Team

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) was one of 19 players named to the U.S. Men's National Team that will represent the country at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Gothenburg, Karlstad and Jonkoping, Sweden April 26-May 11. USA Hockey announced the roster for the two-week tournament yesterday.
Miller posted a 26-9-5 record, a 1.77 goals against average, a .936 saves percentage and eight shutouts in his junior campaign and led NCAA netminders in shutouts, ranked second in wins and minutes played, third in goals against average and tied for third in saves percentage. In CCHA play, Miller was 18-6-4 and paced the league with a 1.64 goals against average and a .941 saves percentage.
Joining Miller in goal on this year's U.S. team is Dieter Kochan of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The U.S. defenseman are Josh DeWolf of the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, the Nashville Predators' Mark Eaton, Jordan Leopold from the University of Minnesota, Chris O'Sullivan of the Swiss National League's Kloten Flyers, the Washington Capitals' Todd Rohloff and the Atlanta Thrashers' Chris Tamer. Forwards named to the squad were the Calgary Flames' Chris Clark, Andy Hilbert of the AHL's Providence Bruins, the Washington Capitals' Steve Konowalchuk, Dan LaCouture of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Nashville Predators' Mark Mowers, Mark Murphy of the AHL's Portland Pirates, Derek Plante of the German Hockey League's Munich Barons, the Buffalo Sabres' Erik Rasmussen, Marty Reasoner of the Edmonton Oilers and the Washington Capitals' Joe Sacco.
The 2001 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner and two-time first team All-American was a member of last year's U.S. entry that placed fourth at the 2001 IIHF World Championship in Germany. Miller did not see any ice time in the tournament, however.
Miller and the U.S. team opens pool play April 27 against Italy in Karlstad, Sweden. Latvia and Canada are the other members of the U.S. pool. The medal round begins May 7 in Gothenburg with the gold-medal game slated for May 11, also in Gothenburg.
