EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State hockey team announced the signings of two players to National Letters of Intent. Both will join the Spartans for the 2002-03 season.
The Spartan signees are:
* David Booth; Forward; 6-1; 205 pounds; Washington, Mich.; born Nov. 24, 1984: Booth, a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, scored 17 goals and added 12 assists for 29 points in 58 games in addition to 41 penalty minutes. In international play last month, he scored a pair of goals in a 3-1 title-game victory over Russia to lead Team USA to its first gold medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship. Booth joined the U.S. team after spending the 2000-01 campaign with Compuware in the North American Hockey League, where he scored 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points in 42 games.
Assistant coach David McAuliffe on Booth: "I would consider David a power forward that has an ability to score. He's got a track record of scoring from his minor hockey days on up. He's a kid that's physically mature. I expect him to play all aspects of the game. He can play a power game and he can play a finesse game."
* Evan Shaw; Defenseman; 6-2; 201 pounds; Cumberland, R.I.; born March 24, 1984: Shaw, a teammate of Booth's with the NTDP and a member of the gold-medal winning U.S. Under-18 team, played in 60 games and scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points and added 52 penalty minutes. Shaw's stint with the NDTP started in 2000-01 when he was part of the U.S. Under-17 Team, scoring one goal and seven assists to go along with 85 penalty minutes in 65 games.
Assistant coach David McAuliffe on Shaw: "Evan is a defensive defenseman with good size who loves to play a physical role, and he's learned to play within himself. He's got a good shot and he plays on the U.S team power play, but the defensive aspect of the game is his niche."
Booth and Shaw are the third and fourth members of the MSU class of 2006. They join right wing Colton Fretter (Harrow, Ont.) and defenseman Corey Potter (Okemos, Mich.), who committed to State during the early signing period in November.
