EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State hockey coach Rick Comley has selected senior defenseman Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) as the captain of the 2002-03 Spartan hockey squad.
"One of the things that any coach looks for in a captain is the respect from the players and coaching staff," commented Comley. "In my short tenure with the program, the one thing that has become clear is that Brad posses outstanding leadership qualities and always gives 110 percent effort. He is the epitome of what every coach wants in a team captain."
Fast served as an assistant captain during the 2001-02 season where he compiled 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 41 games. His 26 points tied for fourth among CCHA blueliners. He was an honorable mention All-CCHA selection and 2002 CCHA All-Academic First-Team honoree.
"It's a tremendous honor for me to be selected team captain," said Fast. "It's a heavy burden; but at the same time, it's something that I am really looking forward to. Looking after my teammates is something that I have done the last few years and it's something that has just manifested over time."
Fast was State's lone representative on the CCHA All-Tournament team after recording the game-winning goal in MSU's 2-1 semifinal win over Northern Michigan (March 16) and assisting on the Spartans' first goal in the championship game against Michigan (March 17). In addition, he scored the game-winning goal in the Spartans' 5-1 victory over Alaska-Fairbanks (Dec. 1).
For his career, Fast has appeared in 125 games and has posted 19-49-68 totals. In addition, he has five power-play goals, two shorthanded goals and four game winners.
Michigan State opens the 2002-03 season with the annual Green and White game on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans will tune up for the regular season with a pair of exhibition games - Sat., Oct. 5 vs. U.S. Under-18 Team and Tues., Oct. 5 vs. Western Ontario. Both games will start at 7 p.m. at Munn Arena.
