Gymnastics Narrowly Falls To Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State gymnastics team suffered a narrow defeat to Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans posted a season-high team score of 195.175, but the Buckeyes edged ahead with a mark of 195.875. Along with the new season-best overall score, MSU posted new season-highs on the uneven bars (48.750), balance beam (48.725) and floor exercise (48.975).
Spartan senior Diana Crea (Beaver Falls, Pa.) won the uneven bars with a season best score of 9.900. Freshman Sarah Alexander (Kernersville, N.C.) claimed second on the event with a 9.850.
Sophomore Nicole Anderson (Kenosha, Wis.) posted a 9.800 on the vault to secure a third-place finish, while Alexander tied for fourth with a 9.775. Senior Ilene Cohen (Wantaugh, N.Y.) finished fourth on the balance beam with a 9.775, just ahead of a trio of Spartans who claimed fifth. Senior Julie Devaty (North Olmstead, Ohio), along with sophomores Anna Hunsinger (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Lauren Simpson (Fenton, Mich.) each scored a 9.750 on the event. Devaty also earned a second-place mark on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.850 to finish in a four-way tie with Anderson and a pair of Ohio State gymnasts.
Hunsinger claimed a third-place finish in the all-around competition, while Alexander took fourth. Aside from the 9.750 on the beam, Hunsinger earned marks of 9.725 (vault), 9.600 (bars) and 9.825 (floor) to total 38.900 - the best score for any Spartan this season. Contributing to Alexander's all-around mark of 37.975 was a 9.775 on the vault, a 9.850 on the bars, a 9.700 on the beam and a mark of 8.650 on the floor.
The Spartans (0-4) will return home to Jenison Field House on Sunday, Feb. 2, when they host the State of Michigan Classic at 4:30 p.m. Joining Michigan State will be Big Ten foe Michigan and Mid-American Conference contenders Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.
