NOTRE DAME, IND. - It was another hard-fought hockey game as Michigan State and Notre Dame skated to a 3-3 overtime tie before a sellout crowd of 2,763 at the Joyce Center on Saturday (Jan. 25). With the tie, MSU ran its unbeaten streak to seven contests (6-0-1).
Senior forward Brian Maloney (Bassano, Alta.) put Michigan State up 1-0 with his sixth goal of the season. Maloney, who found the net on the power play at the 12:37 mark of the opening stanza, was part of a mad scramble in front of the Fighting Irish net. Sophomore forward Ash Goldie (London, Ont.), who extended his point streak to nine games, had two shots on goal in the initial scramble in front of ND netminder Morgan Cey.
Notre Dame (9-12-5 overall, 7-9-2 CCHA) evened the score at one, also on the power play, at the 6:20 mark of the second period. John Wroblewski fired a shot that beat Spartan netminder Matt Migliaccio (Wyandotte, Mich.) low to the blocker side. Evan Nielsen and Rob Globke drew the assists on the Wroblewski goal.
Michigan State retook the lead, 2-1 at the 10:53 mark of the second period. Senior defenseman John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) rifled a shot into an empty net for his ninth goal of the campaign. Cey went behind the net to play the puck; however, Brock Radunske (New Hamburg, Ont.) dug the puck out and slid it over to Liles, who buried the puck into the empty net.
Sophomore forward Jim Slater (Lapeer, Mich.) had an opportunity to give MSU a 3-1 lead as he was awarded a penalty shot with 3:37 to go in the second period. Slater moved in on the ND goalie and fired a shot that bounced off the right crossbar. It marked the second time this season and the third time in his career that Cey has stopped a penalty shot. It also was MSU's first penalty shot attempt since Adam Hall was stopped against Bowling Green on March 9, 2002.
The Spartan defense came up big for MSU to keep the score at 2-1, including Joe Markusen (Park River, N.D.) cleared the puck out of danger as it was sitting in the crease. MSU also received some help from the right pipe as Brett Lebda's clanked one off the post.
Radunske gave MSU some breathing room with an unassisted tally at the 12:34 mark of the final period. Radunske intercepted a Fighting Irish pass and the Spartans took off on a 3-on-1 breakaway. Radunske fired a shot that beat Cey over the shoulder for his sixth goal of the season.
Notre Dame tied the game at three with a pair of goals just 18 seconds apart. Yan Stastny poked home a shot on the power play at 15:55 and Tim Wallace fired a shot that beat Migliaccio on the stick side at 16:13.
Neither team could capitalize in the extra session as MSU held a 5-to-1 advantage on shots on goal. Maloney, Radunske and Slater all have opportunities to convert in overtime.
Migliaccio finished with 40 saves, while Cey stopped 34 shots.
Michigan State (14-9-2 overall, 10-6-1 CCHA) returns to Munn Ice Arena to face Miami (Ohio) next Friday-Saturday (Jan. 31-Feb. 1). Face-off is set for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
