EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State freshman forward Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio) scored the natural hattrick in a span of 9:14 to lead Spartan hockey to a 6-0 victory over Windsor at Munn Ice Arena on Sunday, Oct. 5.
"I'm happy we had a chance to play in a competitive situation," said head coach Rick Comley. "One thing about playing exhibition games like this is that they're better than intrasquad, but they're not as good as the regular season. You have to be really careful not to read too much into it or take too much out of it. It gives everyone a chance to get out there and put the jersey on in a team-type atmosphere in front of the fans, and it really helps your condition."
Goebel started the scoring for MSU at the 9:02 mark of the first period with assists to junior forwards Jim Slater (Lapeer, Mich.) and Mike Lalonde (Chetwynd, B.C.). Just 4:28 later, Goebel again scored for the Spartans as Slater found Goebel alone at the side of the net for his second marker. At the 18:16 mark, Goebel closed out his scoring barrage with a shorthanded tally from freshman forward Drew Miller (East Lansing, Mich.).
"It felt good to get out there," said Goebel. "This definitely helped my confidence. That first goal happened so fast that I didn't even know what happened. After that I just felt so much better, so much more confident. It's great playing on that line. They're amazing players. I basically had to just tap the puck in a couple times and that was awesome."
"Tommy Goebel is a very gifted kid," said Comley. "I just have to decide where I want to play him, if I want to play him with those guys. He played with Jim Slater in juniors. They had a tremendous year together then, but that line with Booth out there last year was excellent. So we just need to look at some combinations out there and see what we want to do."
Sophomore defenseman Corey Potter (Mason, Mich.) closed out the first-period scoring. Junior forward Ash Goldie (London, Ont.) won the face-off and drew the puck back to Potter. Potter sent a shot through a string of traffic from the point for MSU's fourth goal. Junior forward Kevin Estrada (Surrey, B.C.) and Slater closed out the scoring for the Spartans with MSU's fifth and sixth goals, respectively.
Michigan State used two goalies as junior Matt Migliaccio (Wyandotte, Mich.) earned the starting nod, stopping eight Lancer shots in a span of 29:48. Migliaccio was relieved by freshman Dominic Vicari (Clinton Township, Mich.), who stopped three shots.
Michigan State returns to action Oct. 10-11 when the Spartans host the Ice Breaker Tournament at Munn Ice Arena. On Friday, Boston College and Minnesota-Duluth meet in game one at 5 p.m., followed by Michigan State and Findlay at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the third-place game is set for 5 p.m. and the championship tilt at 8 p.m.
