NCAA Announces 2004 Silver Anniversary Award Recipients

INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA Honors Committee has announced six 2004 Silver Anniversary Award recipients, including former Spartan basketball All-America Greg Kelser. This award recognizes former student-athletes who have distinguished themselves since completing their college careers 25 years ago. The recipients will be honored Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Honors Dinner during the annual NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tenn.
Kelser played basketball at Michigan State from 1975-79 and captained the 1979 NCAA Division I national championship team. That same year, Kelser was named All-America, Academic All-America, All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten.
Kelser, whose retired jersey hangs in the Breslin Center rafters, holds several spots in the MSU record books. With 1,092 rebounds, he is No. 1 all-time, while ranking third in free throws (590) and fourth in both points (2,014) and field goals (820).
Following his stint at MSU, Kelser was drafted by the Detroit Pistons as the fourth overall selection in the 1979 NBA draft. In his professional career spanning from 1979 to 1985, he has competed for the Pistons, Seattle Supersonics, San Diego Clippers and Indiana Pacers.
Kelser has worked as a color commentator and broadcaster for ESPN Regional since 1994 and formerly held positions with CBS Sports, RayCom Sports and Black Entertainment Television Sports. He spent five years as a color commentator and broadcaster for the Detroit Pistons Radio Network and is currently par of Fox Sports Net's television coverage for Piston basketball.
Kelser has also served the community since 1977 by speaking to young adults about goal setting and drug-abuse awareness and prevention. He is the director of summer basketball clinics that are free of charge to inner-city Detroit youth and is currently working to establish his own camp. A member of the board of directors for the Big Fellas Association of Detroit since 1985, Kelser also has been an NBA Read to Achieve volunteer.
Trish Millines Dziko (Monmouth), Bruce Furniss (Southern California), Virginia Anne (Ginny) Gilder (Yale), Stacey Johnson (San Jose State) and Kellen Winslow (Missouri) round out the 2004 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award Class.
