Michigan State Gymnastics Opens Season With Green & White Meet

Michigan State gymnastics opened its season with the annual Green & White meet Saturday, Dec. 20, at Jenison Field House. The green team won the competition with an overall combined score of 189.25 while the white team finished with a total of 187.675.
Had the Spartans competed their top six gymnasts in each event in regular competition, MSU would have posted a team score of 193.15.
Individually, Sarah Alexander took the all-around title with a score of 39.05, followed by Lindsey Voth with a 38.15 and Victoria Iakounina's 38.075.
The green team took the early advantage with a team vault score of 47.95. Freshman Chayla HIll's 9.775 led the green team. The white team struggled to a team bar score of 45.70, as two Spartans fell in the event. Freshman Kristen Coleman led with her score of 9.525.
In the second rotation, the green team extended its lead with a team bars score of 46.25 while the white team posted a team vault score of 47.775. Alexander took the event title with a 9.8 on bars, leading the green team. Coleman again led the white team with a mark of 9.75, giving Hill the event title in the vault.
In the third rotation, the green team pushed ahead with a team beam score of 47.30. Alexander led with a 9.85 while sophomore Jaime Miles scored a 9.75, contributing to the team score. The white team posted a team floor score of 47.175, led by junior Nicole Anderson's 9.75 and classmate Jennifer Yarbrough's 9.725.
In the final rotation the green team sealed the exhibition victory with a team floor score of 47.75 while the white team posted a team beam score of 47.025. The green team was led by Alexander's 9.80 while the white team was led by a pair of 9.70s from Anna Hunsinger and Iakounina.
Michigan State gymnastics enjoys the holidays before opening regular season competition Jan. 9 at Jenison Field House when the Spartans host Arizona, Western Michigan and Louisiana State at 8 p.m.
