Softball Blasts Past Radford, 12-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - One of only three games able to be contested on the second day of the UNC Triangle Classic, the Michigan State softball team blasted past Radford University, 12-4, on Saturday (Feb. 15). A nine-run third inning led to the Spartans' third consecutive win of the 2003 season.
Junior Brittney Green (Simi Valley, Calif.) hit a home run in the second inning to give Michigan State a two run lead, as she drove in senior Margaret Schick (Grass Lake, Mich.), who got on base with a walk and a stolen base.
The Spartans went through the entire lineup in the third inning, while just recording one out. Green scored again with senior Lacy Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.), as senior Tiffany Wallace (Wildomar, Calif.) hit a two-run double. Sophomore Janette Hurtado (Rowland Heights, Calif.) and junior Jessica Beech (Okemos, Mich.) each scored, before junior Angel Merren (Wayland, Mich.) and Sandy Lewis (Empire, Mich.). Schick and Green reached both reached home plate to give the Spartans the high-scoring inning.
Sophomore Sheridan Fowler (Thousands Oaks, Calif.) scored as the designated runner in the fifth to give the Spartans the 12-run game. Beech earned the win on the mound for the Spartans, as she split time with sophomore Stephanie Christner (Sigourney, Iowa).
Michigan State, who defeated East Carolina and Temple yesterday, posted a 18-7 run advantage in the three-game weekend. The Triangle Classic, which was slated to run through tomorrow afternoon, was cancelled due to weather and field conditions.
MSU (3-0) returns to action next Friday (Feb. 21) in Santa Barbara, Calif., to take on San Diego State at the Softball By The Beach Invitational. The game's first pitch is slated for 11:45 a.m. PST.
