Softball Drops Two In California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Michigan State softball team dropped a pair of games to San Diego State and California-Santa Barbara at the Softball in the Sun Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif. Both games ended in 2-1 eight-inning losses for the Spartans, who moved to 3-2 on the season.
MSU opened the first game against San Diego State with a run in the first inning as Brittney Green scored on a single by Natalie Furrow. The Spartans held the one run lead into the bottom of the fourth, when the Aztecs tied it up at one. Jessica Beech pitched the entire game, allowing just two hits in 7.2 innings of work - striking out four batters.
The second game against tournament host Santa Barbara followed the same suit as the first game. The Spartans took a one run lead in the second inning, as Lacy Hauxhaurst scored. The Gauchos tied it up at one in the fourth and earned the winning run in the extra inning. Stephanie Christner pitched her first complete game of the season in the loss.
The Spartans continue tomorrow (Feb. 22) at the Softball in the Sun Invitational. MSU will face San Diego and Cal State Northridge at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
