Gymnastics Drops A Road Meet To No. 18 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State gymnastics team suffered a 196.550-193.925 setback to the University of Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The No. 18 Hawkeyes paced the Spartans on every event, en route to the third-highest team score in school history.
The Spartans' (4-5, 1-2 Big Ten) highest finish of the evening was a second-place tie on the floor exercise from sophomore Anna Hunsinger (Elizabethtown, Ky.). Hunsinger posted a 9.850, just ahead of freshman Sarah Alexander (Kernersville, N.C.) who finished with a 9.825.
Alexander also claimed a part of a two-way tie for third place on the balance beam, with a season-best mark of 9.875. Senior Julie Devaty (North Olmstead, Ohio) finished right behind Alexander with a 9.850 for a fifth-place finish.
Michigan State rounded out its top-five showings with fourth-place spots on the uneven bars, as senior Diana Crea (Beaver Falls, Pa.) and Kristin Merritt (Racine, Wis.) each garnered a 9.800 for the tie.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday (Feb. 15), when they compete in the Fox Run Invitational in Durham, N.H. Michigan State will compete against host New Hampshire, George Washington and Bowling Green at 7 p.m.
