ATHENS, Ohio - The Michigan State baseball team put the brakes on a 10-game slide with a 6-2 win over Ohio in game one of a doubleheader, Saturday (Mar. 22) in Athens, Ohio. Game two, however, saw the Spartans fall, 9-1. Michigan State now stands at 4-12 while Ohio improves to 10-6.
MSU broke game one open in the second inning with three runs and then added single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Travis Gulick (So., East Lansing) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the victory.
State's second inning began with three-straight singles by Brady Burrill (Sr., Newhall, Calif.), James Moreno (Jr., Holt) and Jim Deliz (So., Clinton Twp.). Chris Shea (Fr., Rochester) drove in Burrill on a fielder's choice while Moreno and Shea later scored as a result of an Ohio throwing error. After scoring on a wild pitch in the third inning, Gulick drove in Alan Cattrysse (Chatham, Ont.) with a single in the fourth and then belted his second home run of the season in the sixth, making the score 6-1. The Bobcats added a single run in the seventh to make the final score 6-2.
The Spartans picked up an excellent performance from starter Tim Day (So., West Chester, Ohio), who threw a complete-game and scattered seven hits to improve his record to 2-3 on the season while Walt Novosel took the loss for the Bobcats', evening his record to 2-2.
Game two was a different story for the Spartans, as Ohio broke open a 2-1 game in the seventh and eighth innings with a combined seven runs en route to a 9-1 victory. The Bobcats registered 16 hits while starting pitcher Marc Cornell held the Spartans to just five in the game.
Shea evened the game at one for the Spartans in the third inning, scoring of one of Cornell's only miscues of the day-a wild pitch. With the score tied, MSU starting pitcher Patrick Gill (Sr., Grandville) did his part to keep the Bobcats' bats silent, retiring three-of-four batters faced in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Ohio reclaimed the lead, 2-1, in the sixth with a RBI double by Anthony Gressick.
After the Spartans went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, the Bobcats put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh with three runs off five hits and then scored four more times in the eighth to make the final score 9-1.
Gill suffered the loss for MSU, throwing 6.1 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out three to fall to 0-3. Cornell threw a complete game for Ohio and improved to 3-2.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a single game at noon.
