Baseball Falls To Jacksonville, 9-5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Michigan State baseball squad dropped a 9-5 decision to Jacksonville on Wednesday (March 5) at Alexander Brest Field. With the loss, MSU falls to 3-5 on the season while Jacksonville improves to 5-6.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings as MSU scored one run in the first and four more in the second. The Dolphins would score one run in the bottom of the third inning and add five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Jacksonville would tack on three more runs in the eighth, highlighted by a set of back-to-back-to-back doubles.
MSU starter Jeff Gerbe (Fr., Shelby Township) allowed four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings, before being relieved by Adam White (Jr., Jenison) who took the loss, after allowing two runs on three hits and not recording an out. Ryan Kurtz (Jr., Toledo, Ohio) pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
MSU, which pounded out 12 hits off of five JU pitches, also recorded three extra base hits in the game, including triples by Charlie Braun (Sr., Grosse Pointe) and Travis Gulick (So., East Lansing) while James Moreno (Jr., Holt) hit his first homer of the season.
Braun finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, while Gulick was 3-of-5 with one run and one RBI.
Michigan State returns to action on Thursday, March 6 at 5 p.m. when the Spartans face Vanderbilt in Jacksonville, Fla.
