Oliver Wolcott on Gerbe: 'Explosive arm with multiple nasty pitches... can shut a team down and close games out regularly... incessant worker... incredibly athletic, makes plays off the mound that most pitchers wouldn[apos]t dare attempt.'
Scouting Gerbe: Had a solid fall season... throws in the 90-to-93 mph range... worked on slider in the off-season... will battle for the closing position, but could be used as a starter.
2005: Made the transition to reliever... took the mound 20 times, starting once, earning a record of 1-3... had the second-best team ERA at 3.24 in 33.1 innings pitched... held opponents to a team-low .242 batting average... did not allow a home run... recorded a save in first game of the season against Centenary (2/25), not allowing any hits in 1.2 innings of relief... notched second save vs. Western Michigan (5/5), going 1.1 innings without giving up a hit... threw a season-high 4.2 innings vs. Illinois (4/19)... fanned six batters against Central Michigan (5/27) in 2.1 innings of work, recording the win.
2004: Started 10 games on the mound as a sophomore... posted a 2-4 record with a 7.36 ERA in 51.1 innings pitched... finished fifth on the team in strikeouts with 31... tallied a career-best eight strikeouts in a 6-3, complete-game victory over Iowa (4/3)... scattered six hits and struck out four in 5.2 innings against Florida State (3/14)... recorded six strikeouts against Butler (3/7).
2003: Made the team as a walk-on in the fall... emerged as the No. 3 starter on the Spartan staff... posted a 3-2 mark with 21 strikeouts in 55 innings of work... earned his first career win at Indiana (4/13)... earned his first complete-game victory at Illinois (5/3)... recorded a then career-high five strikeouts against Iowa (4/27)... posted four strikeouts at Jacksonville (3/5).
High School: Two-year letterwinner... posted a 6-2 record on the mound with 1.20 ERA, including a league ERA of 0.63, en route to earning all-conference, all-district, all-county and team MVP honors his senior season... earned the all-conference academic award his junior year... also lettered in hockey.
Personal: Born July 4, 1984, to John and Cindy Gerbe... father played baseball at Wayne State... enjoys playing golf and hockey... a human resources major... favorite player is Barry Zito, and his favorite team is the Oakland Athletics... biggest baseball influence is his father.
