EAST LANSING, Mich. -
Michigan State field hockey (12-1; 2-0 Big Ten) dominated from the start of its contest against Central Michigan, scoring its first two goals of the game less than three minutes into competition on Tuesday afternoon in East Lansing. The victory marks MSU's highest scoring contest this season.
"We are very pleased with our offensive pressure," said MSU head coach Michele Madison. "We have done well with getting the ball down the field and capitalizing once we reach the circle."
Junior midfielder Annebet Beerman notched the first goal on a penalty corner opportunity, just 37 seconds into play. Big Ten offensive player of the week Veerle Goudswaard, a senior forward, followed suit with another Spartan goal, just 1:38 minutes into the first half. Juniors Breanna Harpstead and Jessica Miller recorded the assists.
Still, CMU would not be discouraged by State's quick lead. At 28:05, senior back Stasia Burroughs, the Chippewas' assists leader, put her team on the board.
CMU stepped up its aggression and attempted to gradually move down the field, but the Spartans regained possession in the midfield and bore down toward the Chippewa net, where Miller slammed an unassisted goal squarely past goaltender Sarah Mansuco for a 3-1 Spartan lead.
Minutes later, Miller fired a forceful shot into the Central Michigan net for her second unassisted goal of the game and a three-goal lead over the Chippewas.
With 5:37 remaining, Central scrambled near the Green and White net and sent a powerful shot toward State's goal that looked as though it would sail past Spartan junior goaltender Christina Kirkaldy's reach. Senior back Michelle Carstens spun around and batted the ball away from the goal for a defensive save.
As the final seconds of the first half dwindled away on the board, MSU earned a penalty corner opportunity and Goudswaard, assisted by Harpstead and Miller, capitalized on the opportunity to net her second goal of the game and elevate MSU to a 5-1 lead.
"Miller, Goudswaard and Beerman did a phenomenal job on the counterattack," Madison said. "Scoring two goals in the first two minutes proved that we were ready to play today."
With unwavering momentum, State entered the second half and scored another quick goal. Goudswaard notched her third goal of the game just 3:36 minutes into play, marking her third hat trick performance this season.
Despite State's five-goal lead, CMU remained steadfast in its efforts, battling for possession against a potent Spartan offense. Central capitalized on a penalty corner situation, as freshman forward Katie Lincoln snuck the ball into the right side of Kirkaldy's net.
Goudswaard scored her fourth goal of the game with less than four minutes remaining in the game and Beerman closed out scoring with a goal on a penalty corner option that occurred within the last few seconds of play, her second goal of the game.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 9, when they will host the Penn State Nittany Lions in East Lansing at 4 p.m.
