In Michigan State's first exhibition game of the season, Shannon Brown picked up the most playing time with 27 minutes and led all scorers with 16 points, 10 of which came in the second half. For Grand Valley State, Jason Jamerson led the Lakers with 10 points.
Today's game marked GVSU's first game against a Division I opponent since a 108-58 loss to Toledo in 1998.
MSU's defense did not allow GVSU to earn a lead the entire game.
The Lakers' first field goal came 5:25 into the contest to bring the score to 11-2.
Michigan State was outrebounded 36-33 for the game.
The Spartans recorded six blocks with Paul Davis and Shannon Brown each posting two.
Drew Neitzel's first shot and bucket came on a 3-point attempt to give the Spartans an 18-2 lead 7:42 into the game.
Michigan State held the Lakers' leading scorer from a year ago, Marcus Wallace, to only four points. Wallace averaged 16.9 points per game in 2003-04. Wallace was also the team's leading rebounder last season with 5.4 per game; he managed to snag four boards on the evening.
Alan Anderson led all half-time scorers with eight points at the break, going 3-for-3 from the field including 2-for-2 behind the 3-point line. Anderson averaged 8.1 points per game last season. Meanwhile, the Lakers' Callistus Eziukwu, a redshirt freshman from Muskegon, led all players at halftime with six rebounds and went on to post 12 for the game.
After being outscored 44-21 in the first half, the Lakers' offense stepped it up in the second, managing a 41-33 advantage in the second half for a 50.0 field goal percentage, 41.8 percent for the game.
Maurice Ager went 8-11 from the free-throw line. During regular-season play, Ager's career highs are five converted free throws and six total attempts.
Shannon Brown was a force all over the floor besides leading the way with 16 points. Brown posted four assists and rebounds, three steals and two blocks against the Lakers.
Drew Naymick was also stellar from the charity stripe, going 6-for-6 overall. Overall, MSU shot 77.1 percent (27-35) from the line.
Although he went 1-for-5 from the field, Paul Davis was perfect from the free-throw line (4-for-4) and picked up nine boards.
