YPSILANTI, Mich. - Junior Darren McKnight and Sophomore Nick Simmons both recorded pins for Michigan State wrestling, while junior R.J. Boudro and redshirt freshman Bryan Harney notched technical falls as MSU opened its season with a 44-6 victory at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday.
"It was a good opening dual meet for us as a team," said head coach Tom Minkel. "I was able to point out some areas we need to improve on, but overall, I was happy with how we performed."
Ryan Froese (133 pounds) and Andy Simmons (141 lbs.) gave the Spartans a quick 12-0 team lead with forfeits at their respective weight classes.
Because of the two forfeits, the meet started with the 149-pound weight class with McKnight. After getting out to a quick 4-1 lead with two duck-under takedowns, McKnight put Ahmed Joumaa to his back working an armbar. He notched his second pin of the season at 2:32 of the first period. McKnight improves to 9-3 on the season, and is 7-3 in his dual meet career.
State's Matt McCarty lost a close match to Chad Roush at 157 lbs. McCarty was up 3-2 after the first period, but gave up a takedown in the second period that put Roush ahead by one point. Unable to turn Roush and get back points in the third period, McCarty lost the match 4-3.
Spartan Bryan Harney won his first career dual meet match over R.J. Pratt at 165 lbs. Harney compiled a total of six takedowns in the match, as well as five near-fall points. With the addition of riding time, he notched his first technical fall of the season, 18-3. Harney is now 5-2 on the season.
In his dual meet debut for the Green and White, Boudro defeated Ben Best by technical fall, 24-9. Boudro racked up 11 takedowns, seven of them in the third period, to get five more team points for Michigan State. He now has two technical falls on the season, the other coming against Eddie Phillips at the MSU Open, and is now 5-1 on the season.
Clemens took the victory over Tim Breyer at 197 lbs. to put the Spartans up 38-3. He compiled eight takedowns and a reversal en route to a 20-7 victory. The victory gives Clemens 10 dual meet wins in his career.
In the most exciting match of the night, MSU's Max Lossen fell to Charlie Walker in overtime, 4-2. Lossen took a 2-1 lead in the third period on a reversal, but Walker recorded an escape to tie the match at two at the end of regulation. After several mad scrambles in overtime, Walker took Lossen down for the victory.
In the final match of the meet at 125 lbs., No. 3 Nick Simmons pinned Tony Lajoie to give the Spartans the 44-6 team victory. Simmons was leading the match, 9-0, with three takedowns when he pinned Lajoie at 5:47 of the third period. Simmons is now 5-0 on the year and now has 26 career pins.
