EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 2004 Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational, hosted by the Michigan State men's golf team, will be held this Saturday and Sunday (May 1-2) at the Forest Akers West Golf Course, located on the Michigan State campus.
The 37th annual tournament begins on Saturday, May 1 with a 36-hole shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday, May 2 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, followed by an awards ceremony afterwards.
This year's tournament field features 14 games, including six of the top eight teams in the Midwest District. In addition to Michigan State, other teams competing include: Minnesota, currently ranked No. 11 in the country; Toledo, ranked No. 36 in the country; Eastern Michigan and local product Korey Mahoney; and Michigan.
Junior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) leads the Spartans with the team's best scoring average (74.58), while freshman Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) is second on the squad with a 75.00 scoring average. Harmon also paces the team in top-20 finishes (5), top-10 finishes (2) and lowest round (66).
The Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational is one of the oldest running collegiate golf tournaments in the country. The tournament, which began as the Spartan Invitational in 1966, was renamed in 1992 in honor of Bruce Fossum, longtime Spartan coach and teacher.
