Men's Golf Heads To Boilermaker Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf heads to the 2004 Boilermaker Invitational, hosted by Purdue, this Saturday-Sunday (April 10-11). This year's tournament is being played at the par 72, 7,200-yard Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
The 18-team field features: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Kent State, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TCU and Wisconsin.
On Saturday, teams will play 36 holes with an 8 a.m. EST shotgun start, while on Sunday, the final 18 holes will be played with an 8 a.m. EST shotgun start.
Leading the team into this weekend is junior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.). Ruthkoski has the team's lowest scoring average (74.65) and is coming off of a 12th-place showing at the Border Olympics (70-70-75 - 215).
Senior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.), senior Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.), freshman Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and red-shirt freshman Zac Zedrick (Danville, Ill.) also will compete in the Spartans' third event of the spring.
Walk-on freshman Mitch Pierce (Lake Fenton, Mich.) rounds out the Spartan lineup and will make his second appearance this season. Pierce's first collegiate tournament was the Alabama Spring Invitational where he fired a 74-81-83 - 238.
This is the second tournament of an important three-week stretch for the Spartan golf team. This week's field features 12 teams from the Midwest district, including five of the top seven. In order to qualify for the Central Regional, MSU must end the season ranked in the top six of the Midwest district. The Spartans currently sit in 11th position.
Following the Boilermaker Invitational, MSU travels to Kepler Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, April 17-18 and returns home to host the Bruce Fossum/Taylor Made Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course, May 1-2.
