GROSSE ILE, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore golfer Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) continued his quest for the 93rd Michigan Amateur Championship as he won both of his matches on Thursday, June 25 at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.
Harmon, who was the stroke-play medalist, picked up a 9&7 decision over Ryan Lenahan in the opening round of match play on Thursday and then recorded a 3&2 decision over Adam Miller in the afternoon. He will face Ryan Johnson on Friday (June 25) at 8 a.m.
"I think this is going to be fun," remarked Harmon. "I was pretty fortunate that the two players I had weren't playing their top games and got into some trouble."
The quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday afternoon, with the semifinals and final scheduled for Saturday
MSU seniors James Chestnut (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) dropped in match play. Chestnut dropped a 7&6 decision to John Lindholm, who is also from Grand Blanc. Ruthkoski won his Thursday morning match, a 1-up decision of Walter Gieselman before falling 1-up to Bill O'Connor in the afternoon.
