GROSSE ILE, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore golfer Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished as the runner-up at the 93rd Michigan Amateur Championship at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club on Saturday, June 26.
In Saturday's semifinal, Harmon beat 2002 Michigan Amateur Champion and East Lansing native Korey Mahoney, 5&4, to advance to the championship match. However, Harmon would drop a 3&2 decision to Grosse Ile's Jeff Cuzzort to claim second-place.
"He (Jeff Cuzzort) took advantage of the opportunities and I didn't," Harmon said. "I was the medalist in stroke play and runner-up in match play, things that no one will remember. I had a good week, though. I played well."
Harmon took stroke-play medalist honors on Wednesday, June 23, after shooting a two-round score of 141 (70-71) to become just the second medalist in the last 25 years not to break par. He finished two strokes ahead of second-place finishers Ryan Brehm and Dan Koernke.
