EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics (7-2; 1-0 Big Ten) posted a team total of 193.200 to triumph over Northern Illinois' 191.600 in East Lansing on Sunday, Jan. 30.
State earned a split over the weekend and Sunday's victory was particularly sweet after a tough loss to LSU on Friday, Jan. 28.
"I'm very pleased with the team's comeback performance today, compared to Friday night," said MSU head coach Kathie Klages.
MSU gymnastics proved its resiliency in rallying together to win, and the Spartans had a solid showing across the board.
MSU opened competition on vault, where Chayla Hill captured the meet title with a 9.800 performance. Freshman Bethany Little (9.750) ranked second, while sophomore Kristen Coleman (9.700) came in third.
The Spartan senior class dominated on the bars. Lauren Simpson claimed the meet title on bars, posting 9.750, while Kristin Merritt and Jennifer Yarbrough had 9.725 and 9.700, respectively.
Sophomore Chayla Hill grabbed the meet title on the floor with her 9.850 performance. This marks the second time in three meets in which Hill has captured the meet title on both the floor and vault.
Co-captains (senior) Nicole June and (junior) Sarah Alexander took second and third place on the floor, recording 9.825 and 9.800, respectively.
Alexander claimed the meet title on beam, registering 9.850. While beam is often one of the Spartans' stronger events, MSU struggled on Sunday.
"I'm a little disappointed with our beam performance," Klages said. "We had three seniors fall. I know that people do make mistakes and that everyone is tired from the double-meet weekend, but this team is much better than what we displayed on beam today. We will go back to work and prepare very diligently for the Michigan Classic."
Next, MSU heads to Western Michigan University for the State of Michigan Classic, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 6, 2005.
