MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The No. 17 Michigan State wrestling team received victories from junior All-Americans Nick and Andy Simmons, but fell to the ninth-ranked Central Michigan Chippewas, 25-6, Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Rose Arena.
"Coming off a long tournament at Penn State this weekend, I just don't think we had that spark," head coach Tom Minkel said. "But at the same time, Central wrestled quite a dual. They won all the one-point matches."
Nick Simmons gave the Spartans an early 3-0 lead in the dual meet with a 7-1 decision over Matt Steintrager. Simmons, currently ranked fourth at 125 pounds, scored a takedown in each of the first two periods to improve his record to 12-0 on the season.
At 133 pounds, Jeff Wimberley dropped the match to No. 13 Jason Borrelli, 12-6, but persevered late in the third period to keep the match from being a major decision.
The Green and White went back on top following the 141-pound bout, where No. 4 Andy Simmons improved to 15-1 on the season, defeating Eric Kruger, 6-3. Like his brother earlier in the evening, Andy Simmons tallied takedowns in each of the first two periods, and tacked on a riding time point in the win.
The Chippewas evened the dual score at six apiece, claiming the decision at 149 pounds. All-American Mark DiSalvo overcame senior captain Darren McKnight in the match, winning 8-2.
Tony Greathouse gave Spartan fans another exciting match against a ranked opponent at 157 pounds, but this time came up just short, falling to No. 15 Eric Neil, 7-5. Greathouse trailed 4-1 after one period, but scored three-straight points in the second period to tie the match heading into the third. In the final frame, Neil scored the lone takedown to give CMU its first lead of the dual, 9-6.
Wrestling in his first dual meet of the season, Justin Mora dropped the 165-pound match to CMU's Andy Keller, 7-3. Keller went ahead in the second with a takedown and a reversal, and never relinquished the lead.
State just narrowly missed out on another win at 174 pounds, where No. 15 Brandon Sinnott defeated No. 12 R.J. Boudro, 3-2. Trailing 3-0 in the third, Boudro scored an escape and received a stalling point, but couldn't execute the match-clinching takedown.
MSU failed to score a takedown in its third straight match, as Christian Sinnott won by the same score as his twin brother Brandon, 3-2, against Joe Williams at 184 pounds. The win secured the dual-meet victory for Central Michigan.
Central won its sixth-straight match at 197 pounds, as All-American Wynn Michalek downed senior Jeff Clemens by the first major decision of the night, 10-2.
Despite a relentless effort by Max Lossen down the stretch, the senior from Winona, Minn., fell in the 285-pound bout, 3-2, to No. 13 Bubba Gritter. Lossen nearly had a takedown in the closing seconds, but lost Gritter's ankle, and the match in the closing seconds..
The Spartans return to action this Saturday, Dec. 10, when they host Cleveland State at Jenison Field House. The dual is slated for 7 p.m., and is MSU's final meet of the first semester.
