USA Women Win Gold At World University Games

IZMIR, Turkey - The 2005 Women's World University Games Team defeated Serbia and Montenegro, 79-53, on Friday to capture the gold medal. Michigan State senior forward Liz Shimek tallied five points, five rebounds and three steals. LSU's Seimone Augustus notched a team-high 18 points to pace the Americans.
Serbia and Montenegro scored the first basket of the game, but Team USA responded with a 10-0 run and held a 15-8 lead after one period. The lead was cut to 22-16, but the Americans quickly pulled away and held a 43-28 lead at the half. The U.S. was never threatened in the second half.
This is the sixth gold medal for Team USA at the World University Games. In seven games, the U.S. scored 97.7 ppg and dominated the battle of the boards with a +24.7 margin. Shimek finished the tournament averaging 7.3 points and 6.6 rebounds.
