EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie has been named the 2005 Nike Championship Basketball Clinic Coach of the Year. McCallie will receive the award Saturday, Sept. 17 in Bradenton, Fla., at the Nike Championship Basketball Clinic hosted by the IMG Basketball Academy. In addition to the award, McCallie will also get $10,000 in her name donated to the Jimmy V. Foundation.
McCallie is entering her sixth season as MSU's head coach. She led the Spartans to the greatest season in school history in 2004-05, as MSU advanced to the NCAA Championship game, won the Big Ten Tournament championship, tied for the regular season Big Ten championship and notched a school-record 33 wins. For her efforts, McCallie was named the Associated Press Coach of the Year.
McCallie, whose five-year record at MSU stands at 101-56, was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year by the league's media, earning her fourth conference coach of the year award after winning three such honors during eight seasons at Maine (1992-2000). At Maine, she led the Black Bears to six-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and has brought MSU to the Big Dance the past three seasons.
