EAST LANSING, Mich. - California jumped to an early 1-0 lead, but Michigan State came storming back, scoring four unanswered goals to top the Golden Bears 4-1 in Berkeley Friday afternoon.
Cal struck at the 12:37 mark, but from there on out, it would be all Michigan State. Senior Michelle Huynh-Ba started it off for the Spartans, scoring her first of two goals at 19:30. Freshman Inge Kaars gave MSU the lead before the end of the half, scoring on a Jessica Miller corner at 32:48.
Huynh-Ba opened the second half with a 50-yard sprint down the field, resulting in a diving goal, her second of the day, at 37:01. Sophomore Becky Manning capped things off with a scrambling goal at 67:44. Senior Christina Kirkaldy recorded four saves in the win.
"We made some defensive changes and were able to stop their ball movement," commented head coach Michele Madison after the game. "Amy Schneider, Kaars and Manning really played well in the back with Kirkaldy, and Michelle's second goal was absolutely phenomenal."
MSU returns to action Saturday to play Pacific in Berkely at 7 p.m. The Spartans then get a day of rest before facing Stanford in Palo Alto on Monday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
