EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State guard Kristin Haynie recently competed for the USA Basketball Senior Women's National Team during its spring training tour. Haynie averaged 3.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.0 assists in seven games as the USA compiled a 10-1 overall record.
The USA team's spring training comprised of three tours. Haynie competed in the second spring tour in France and Hungary for all three games from March 17-24, and then played in four of the five games at the Opals World Challenge in Australia from April 7-12. The USA claimed the Opals World Challenge title with a 4-1 record.
Haynie averaged 5.3 ppg in her first leg of the tour. Her best game came against USO Mondeville Basketball in Mondeville, France, as she scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting with four assists and four steals. She scored six points in just 11 minutes of action versus China in the Opals World Challenge on April 10.
The three separate training tours gave the USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team Committee a chance to evaluate an assortment of elite players who are candidates for the 12-member 2006 USA Women's World Championship Team, while also allowing USA head coach Anne Donovan (Seattle Storm) and her staff to prepare for the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
The USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team Committee, chaired by Reneé Brown, the WNBA's Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations, issued the invitations to the players for the three spring training camps and is charged with the selection of the 2006 USA World Championship squad, which will be named later this summer.
Following the 2006 WNBA regular season, the USA will regroup in late August for a final training camp before defending its World Championship title at the 15th FIBA World Championship, scheduled to be played Sept. 12-23 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
