EAST LANSING, Mich. - Celebrating its 39th anniversary, The Fossum Invitational has developed into one of the country's most competitive collegiate tournaments. Michigan State has claimed six titles in the invitational's 39-year history, while it last won its home tournament in 1992.
Legendary head coach Bruce Fossum founded the Spartan Invitational in 1966, and in 2002, the tournament was renamed to honor the program's first head coach. In his career, Fossum claimed 17 tournament titles, the program's first Big Ten Championship in 1969, and led the Spartans to five NCAA Tournament team appearances.
Fossum was inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1988, and combined with his wife Mary's induction in 1998, the Fossum's are the only husband-wife combination in the Hall of Fame.
