The Michigan State men's golf team placed sixth in a field of 15 at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by UAB, in Birmingham, Ala., Sept. 25-26. The Spartans managed to card sub-300 scores in Monday's first two rounds of play but struggled in Tuesday's final round, posting a 304. Michigan State totaled a two-day, 54-hole score of 893 (296-293-304).
Held at the Shoal Creek Country Club, a par-72, 7,114-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course, Alabama won the team title at 869 (288-288-293). Florida State's Jonas Blixt took medalist honors, firing a five-under 211 (68-76-67).
Michigan State's top finisher was red-shirt sophomore Grant Tungate, placing tied for 18th at six-over-par 222 (74-71-77). His second-round total of 71 was MSU's best outing of the tournament and Tungate recorded the first top-20 finish and highest placing of his career. It marks just the second time Tungate has led the team at an event.
Senior Matt Harmon was the next highest Spartan on the leaderboard, carding a 224 (76-73-75), tying for 23rd. Junior Ryan Brehm was next on the list for MSU, tying for 37th at 226 (74-72-80). Rounding out the Spartan lineup was sophomore Randy Hutchinson (T42, 73-77-77--227) and freshman Jack Newman (T52, 75-80-75--230).
With three of its five fall tournaments under its belt, Michigan State resumes play at the Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern at the Skokie Country Club, Oct. 8-9.
