PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Michigan State freshman Nicole Curler has been named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Curler currently leads the nation on the balance beam after posting a 9.925 on the event in the season opener against Arizona on Jan. 12. The award is the first such honor of her career, and marks the first Spartan Gymnast of the Week honoree since the 2005 season.
"I am thrilled that Nicole won the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award," Michigan State head coach Kathie Klages said. "She had an outstanding competition, especially for a freshman, and we are very pleased she is a Spartan."
Curler picks up the weekly honor after winning both the balance beam (9.925) and floor exercise (9.875), while also tying for first in the all-around against No. 16 Arizona. The Bay City, Mich., native tied with teammate Kristen Coleman in the all-around competition, tallying a mark of 39.400. Curler helped MSU achieve its highest team mark on the uneven bars since the 2000 season and the third-highest in Spartan history (49.325).
The ninth-ranked Spartans continue the 2007 season, traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Friday to compete in a quad meet with host Pittsburgh, Maryland and No. 11 Virginia.
