Senior offensive lineman Mike Gyetvai is MSU's most experienced and versatile lineman with 23 starts to his credit. In his career, he has played every position on the offensive line except center. On Friday in the Champs Sports Bowl, he will be playing his last game as a Spartan, rotating at left guard with Kenny Shane. Gyetvai recently spoke with msuspartans.com about the game and his future plans after graduation.
Is getting ready for your first bowl game everything you thought it was going to be?
"It's more. When we came up to this place, it was an unbelievable resort. It's been a great time. Practices have been hard, but that's kind of par for the course, I guess. We've had a lot of fun."
What team activities have you done since your arrival in Orlando?
"We went to Disney World, and because Jason Diehl has an injured knee, we got an express pass, so we got hooked up and did a lot of the rides. The best ride I would have to say is the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at MGM Studios."
What are some of the challenges Boston College represents?
"Well, they are the No. 1 run defense in the country, so it's going to be tough. We are going to try and stick with the basics of what got us here. We have to play tough and keep our pads low and see if we can knock them off the ball. Everyone views it as a challenge. It's a great way to prove yourself - what better way to do it than against the No. 1 rushing defense in the country?"
Have you thought about this being your last career game as a Spartan?
"I'm just letting this thing ride out for now. Maybe once the week is over I'll look back and think about it, but so far I've been pretty happy."
You've played all over on the offensive line. Do you have a favorite position?
"I like guard the most and I'll tell you why - because when you make a mistake at tackle, everyone sees it because you're out on the edge. When you make mistakes at guard, people just wonder where that guy came from, but at tackle, they're like, `That's the guy who made the mistake.' The coaches all know, but you don't have 75,000 people booing you."
Are you going to try any more football after Friday's game?
"No, I'm pretty much done. I won't have too many miles on the odometer if I keep doing this stuff. I think this is going to be it for me. I'm scheduled to graduate in the spring with a degree in mechanical engineering, so it's on to looking for a job in the real world."
