PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Michigan State's Rochelle Robinson has been honored by the Big Ten Conference office for the second consecutive week with Gymnast of the Week accolades. Robinson shares the Feb. 14 award as Co-Gymnast of the Week with Michigan's Tatjana Thuenor-Rego. The announcement came from the conference office on Wednesday. She earns the award after posting a perfect 10.0 on vault at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10 to become the first Spartan gymnast to ever record a perfect 10.0 on any event. The freshman tumbler currently ranks seventh in the country on vault with a season average of 9.890. The award is the second league honor of her career, and marks the fourth Spartan Gymnast of the Week honoree this season, as freshman Nicole Curler garnered the honor on Jan. 17, and senior Kristen Coleman earned the award on Jan. 31.
"Scoring the first perfect 10 in the history of MSU gymnastics, Rochelle Robinson is certainly deserving of the Co-Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award," Michigan State head coach Kathie Klages said. "We are thrilled to add this accomplishment to the record books.""
Robinson picks up her second Gymnast of the Week accolade after becoming the first gymnast in Michigan State history to record a perfect score, when she posted a 10.0 on vault at the Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 10. Robinson is just one of three gymnasts in the nation who have recorded a flawless score this season. The Chesapeake, Va., native, also claimed second place in the all-around competition with a 38.875. Robinson currently holds the top three scores on the MSU all-time record chart.
Robinson claimed her first Gymnast of the Week honor after posting three first-place individual event finishes at the State of Michigan Classic on Feb. 3. Robinson took top honors on vault and floor exercise with a pair of 9.925 scores, while she matched teammate Kristen Coleman's first-place finish on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.825. Robinson helped the Spartans claim the State of Michigan Classic team title, their first since the 2003 season.
"I'm completely thrilled and very overwhelmed," Robinson said. "I'm so lucky to have such great teammates and coaches that get to share this award with me. We are excited to compete at home this weekend versus Illinois."
No. 18 Michigan State continues the 2007 regular season this weekend, hosting fellow Big Ten opponent, Illinois, on Feb. 17. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Jenison Field House.
