EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 18 Michigan State Gymnastics team suffered a 194.700-193.925 setback to Big Ten opponent Illinois on Saturday night at Jenison Field House. Spartan freshman Rochelle Robinson won the only individual event title of the night for the Green and White with a 9.850 on vault.
Robinson's mark on vault was a meet-best, while four different Illinois gymnasts captured individual titles on the uneven bars (Cara Pomeroy, 9.875), balance beam (Julie Crall, 9.850), floor exercise (Sarah Schmidt, 9.825) and in the all-around competition (Nicole Cowart, 39.025). MSU's Kristen Coleman tied for second as the top Spartan finisher on the uneven bars with a 9.800, Robinson finished tied for third on the balance beam with a season high 9.750, and Coleman and Robinson matched scores of 9.800 to finish tied for second on the floor exercise. Robinson closed a solid all-around effort with a second-place mark of 38.825, while Katlyn Roggensack turned in another consistent all-around performance with a third-place finish of 38.800.
The Spartans followed the Olympic order of events in the meet, beginning the competition on vault with a team score of 48.625. Victoria Iakounina finished third overall in the event with a season best 9.775, while Coleman (9.725), Nicole Curler (9.675) and Roggensack (9.600) also contributed for MSU on the apparatus.
State competed on the uneven bars during the second rotation, posting a team score of 48.425. Freshman Megan Bergland turned in a 9.775 to finish tied for fourth, followed by Roggensack (9.725), Dani Fanning (9.700) and Robinson (9.425) for the Green and White.
Trailing Illinois, 97.175-97.050, heading into the final two rotations of the night, MSU was forced to count a fall during its balance beam rotation, matching its season low with a combined team score of 47.975. Following Robinson's third-place mark, Roggensack contributed a 9.700, while Bergland added a 9.650, and veterans Iakounina and Coleman posted scores of 9.625 and 9.250, respectively.
MSU ended the meet on the floor exercise with a team score of 48.900. Roggensack and Curler matched scores of 9.775, finishing tied for fourth overall, while Fanning also contributed a 9.750 for the Spartans on the event.
Michigan State continues the 2007 season when it travels to West Virginia on Feb. 23. The meet is set to start at 7:30 ET in the WVU Coliseum.
