The Opening Tip
Michigan State got back to its defensive basics in its first-round victory over Marquette, holding the Golden Eagles to 31.9 percent shooting after allowing two opponents in the Big Ten Tournament to shoot 47.2 percent. The Spartans will now face No. 1 seed North Carolina. The Tar Heels and Spartans last met in the 2005 National Semifinals. MSU led by five at halftime, but UNC rallied for a 87-71 victory en route to the NCAA Championship.
The Starting Five
1. MSU In A Quick Turnaround - Under Tom Izzo, Michigan State is 11-1 in the second game of weekend during the NCAA Tournament with just one day of preparation. The lone loss came against Texas in the 2003 Elite Eight.
2. A Contrast In Styles - A quick look at the stats provides a clear look at the stark contrast in styles for Michigan State and North Carolina. The Tar Heels are averaging 86.3 points per game offensively. The Spartans have scored 86 points just twice this season. On the flip side, UNC is allowing opponents to score 68.0 points per game, while just two Spartan opponents have scored more than 68 points.
3. Battle On The Boards - Michigan State and North Carolina are two of the best rebounding teams in the nation. UNC out-rebounds its opponent by a +8.6 margin, while MSU owns a +7.6 margin. According to the most recent NCAA statistics (March 12), the Tar Heels ranks third in rebound margin, while the Spartans are fifth.
4. A Perfect 10 - Michigan State is making its school-record 10th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. It is the longest current streak among Big Ten schools and fifth longest in the nation. Only Arizona (23), Kansas (18), Kentucky (16) and Duke (12) have longer current streaks. It is also the second longest streak in Big Ten history. Indiana appeared in 18 consecutive tournaments between 1986 and 2003.
5. Spartan Defense Is Big Ten's Best - Michigan State has established itself as the top defensive team in the Big Ten. The Spartans lead the league in field-goal percentage defense (.381) and scoring defense (56.5 ppg), and rank third in 3-point field-goal percentage defense (.320) and fourth in blocked shots (4.76 bpg) (Big Ten rankings as of March 12). Maryland (54.8%) and Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament (51.1%) are the only two of MSU's 34 opponents to shoot better than 47 percent from the field, as 23 opponents have shot below 40 percent and 25 below 42 percent. The Spartans have held four opponents (Brown, The Citadel, Bradley and IPFW) below 30 percent shooting. Michigan State has also held nine of its 34 opponents under 50 points. MSU's defense is also among the nation's best, ranking fourth in scoring defense (56.7 ppg), seventh in field-goal percentage defense (38.3%) and 32nd in blocked shots (4.8 bpg), according to the most recent NCAA stats (March 12).
