Spartans Finish Day Two With More Improvements

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Michigan State track and field team finished competition at the Hillsdale Relays with a handful of personal-best times and one NCAA-regional qualifying time by Ian Boyle in the 800-meter run on Saturday.
"The meet went well for us," director of cross country and track and field Walt Drenth said. "At this time of the year, we are looking for athletes that can score points for us at the Big Ten meet and can continue improving as we get closer to the competition."
The highlight of the meet came in the men's 800-meter run as the Spartans dominated the top spots. Ian Boyle ran a personal best and NCAA-regional qualifying time of 1:49.50. The third-place finish for the freshman was the first qualifying time of his career. Phil Marlatt finished in fifth place with a personal-best time of 1:50.46, and Jim Pancoast improved on his personal-best time by almost three seconds with 1:51.63 to finish ninth. Robert Sherman finished 11th with a time of 1:52.14 and Kevin Dacres ran a 1:53.24 for a 17th-place finish.
Kyle Sweeney turned in a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, and was just fractions of a second off an NCAA-regional qualifying time with a personal-best mark of 14.72.
On the women's side, Paris Mandy placed second in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.18, while in the 400-meter dash, Marquita Allen broke a personal-best time with a mark of 56.24. Lisa Senakiewich finished in fifth place in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:12.59, almost three seconds off her previous career best.
The team will head to Michigan for the Len Paddock Invitational on May 4-5 before traveling to the Big Ten Championships on May 11-13 at Penn State.
